EMDR THERAPY

 Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing

Evidence-based therapy that helps your nervous system process trauma, adverse experiences, and memories that continue to feel activating in the present.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy that helps people heal from the emotional distress caused by trauma, adverse life experiences, and overwhelming events.

Rather than focusing on detailed talk about the past, EMDR works with the brain and body’s natural capacity to process experiences that were never fully integrated. When distressing memories get “stuck,” they can continue to affect thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and physical sensations in the present. EMDR helps the nervous system safely reprocess these memories so they no longer feel activating or overwhelming.

Many clients describe EMDR as helping memories feel more distant, less emotionally charged, and easier to hold without being taken over by them.

The EMDR Protocol

EMDR follows a well-researched, eight-phase protocol designed to prioritize safety, pacing, and client choice:

    1.    History Taking & Treatment Planning

We explore your concerns, experiences, and goals, and determine whether EMDR is an appropriate fit.

    2.    Preparation & Resourcing

You learn grounding, regulation, and stabilization skills to ensure you feel supported and safe before processing begins.

    3.    Assessment

Specific memories, beliefs, emotions, and body sensations are identified as targets for reprocessing.

    4.    Desensitization

Using bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or tones), the brain is guided to reprocess distressing material.

    5.    Installation

Adaptive, healthier beliefs about yourself are strengthened and integrated.

    6.    Body Scan

Residual tension or distress in the body is identified and cleared.

    7.    Closure

Each session ends with grounding to ensure emotional stability.

    8.    Reevaluation

Progress is reviewed and future targets are identified.

EMDR can be used flexibly and thoughtfully, including with complex trauma, developmental trauma, and relational wounds, always at a pace that respects your nervous system.
